Default Is Guild Wars Right for me? Help required!

Hello everyone

I've been hearing about Guild Wars for quite some time now, But i was never into online RPG'ing really, And tend to stick to offline master pieces like Baldurs Gate and the like. Lately I've thought about buying Guild Wars, And since there is no immediate open trial, I've figured a few questions here would help me decide.

I'm mostly interested in PvE and melee character builds, Or hybrids of sorts - Never enjoyed playing a full fledged mage for some reason. Aside from that, Even though i enjoy playing with friends\groups\guilds\etc, I do also enjoy the occasional soloing - So i would want a game which can be played alone aswell as the game progresses.

Another issue is that because of my duties in real life, I'm only home at weekends and unable to play more than a dozen of days a month at best. That is the reason most MMORPG games do not suit me from the beginning.

Do you think Guild Wars will give me what I'm looking for?
Any comments appreciated. Thanks in advance

-- Ran Sagy.

well you sound like you want to be a casual player which many people are and like to do missions/quests and not into the grinding.

Most missions/farming high end areas need to be done in groups but you can solo farm/run areas to gain money.

You can aslo use henchmen and urself to do missions without using other people

I would get the game its rly good fun

With Nightfall coming out, there will be a total of 5 non-caster classes, so you should be able to find something you like. =) (yes, you can dual class)

GW seems to be catered to people just like you; people who don't have as much time on their hands, but still want to take part in the online love. Even the hardest missions can be done with just you and the henchmen. (mercenaries)
One of the greatest things about GW is that you can drop it for a while and come back, and just pick up where you left off. I quit for 3 or 4 months, and when I came back there was a ton of new stuff waiting for me.

I know I have a lot of fun playing, and I don't see why you wouldn't either. I do recommend starting with Prophecies, though.

With the upcoming 3rd chapter and the so called "Heroes"(Informations on gw-website) playing solo will be even easier.

About the time problem:
This is still a game, and you can definitely play it at weekends only. You decide how much and how often you play, your items stay, everything is safe and waiting for the next weekend, when you play again

Unlike many MMO's, Guild Wars allows players to get the highest stats on their armor and items very easily and quickly. Although it takes more than just a day to get everything you may need, it will not be a life ling grind getting the best out there. Having fun and using your imagination to create builds and invent tactics is more of the fun here than grinding for days.

For the person who only has time to play a bit here and there, GW is probably a very good fit for you. With no monthly fee, you'll never feel like you're wasting your money because of the lack of playing time.

There's a lot of flexibility in how you play the game. You can go adventuring with Henchmen (AI's) or group up with real people to go get things done. Once you've learned the ropes, you can also go out all by yourself to challenge the environment around you.

For the PvE player, either Prophecies (the original GW) or Nightfall (coming out Oct 27th) would be good places to start. factions is not new PvE player friendly. While you may be able to get Prophecies cheaper, there won't be as many people playing in that part of the game when Nightfall comes out. With Nightfall, there will be people climbing all over each other playing (which is not a problem at all) but what's beyond the beginning areas of the game is unknown. If Nightfall is as good throughout the game as the first parts, then it's going to be great!

Guild Wars Prophecies (the first one) has only 1 melee class - a Warrior. Warriors function much like fighters do in BG. They have high amounts of armor, use swords, axes, or hammers (keep in mind that in GW all swords and axes are 1 handed and all hammers are 2 handed), are capable of doing and taking large amounts of damage, and are essential to most teams.

Guild Wars Factions (the second one) brings another melee class to players - the Assassin. The Assassin is like a Thief/Mage in BG. They use daggers to cause large amounts of damage to a single target, and when they are dead (the target), the Assassin runs from the melee and finds another target. They also have degenerative hexes and the ability to 'shadow step', which means they can teleport to other people/places. Keep in mind that Factions focuses on PvP a bit more than the other games do.

Guild Wars Nightfall (the third one) has a Dervish as the melee class. They have crappy armor but use enchantments to keep themselves alive. Their scythes can attack multiple foes at once and do large amounts of damage. Nightfall isn't out yet so I don't know much else. It's supposed to be very PvE based so you should like this one.

Overall, I think a Warrior/Ranger is for you. When a character is made they only have 1 profession, and as you go along there are quests that let you pick a second. It is definitely NOT like dual-classing in BG. There is no downside to taking a secondary proffesion.

The Warrior primary brings higher armor than the ranger and is better suited to melee than a Ranger/Warrior would (each proffesion has their own armor sets and they all have different armor levels and bonuses. You cannot use the armor of your secondary proffesion). The Ranger secondary is good for support, whether you use it for a pet (which levels alongside you and will not turn against you no matter what), or 'Wilderness Survival', which helps you survive in the wilderness (you probably guessed that).

Thats no problem. With the level cap at 20 (its not that high, and everyone who wants it raised is just a WoW fan trying to make GW exactly like it) you don't feel pressured to have to grind 24/7. Also, you don't need 'uber leet' weapons or armor to finish the game. You can go through the whole game without having to even think about farming.

Definately. I'd start with Prophecies, as it has a very good introduction for new players and does not rush you into everything. Factions is very much a PvP thing and for PvE lovers it only offers half the missions Prophecies does. I'd skip it and go for Nightfall.

1. You should have received a trial key with your copy.
2. Check the first stickied thread in this section.

This is what I'm talking about:

i would say GW is a great game to start your online gaming life. You don't have to pay montly instalments and the PvE aspect is simple enough to understand. Buy Nightfall as it is where everybody is at and u get to use Heroes. When you find playing online is to your liking i would suggest moving on to other online games that have better PvE, replayability and endgame content.
